Foreign media reported on August 26 that from June 2024 to June 2025, Nigeria imported 1,721 MW of solar panels, surpassing Egypt to become Africa's second-largest importer after South Africa. Algeria ranked third with 1,199 MW.

During the same period, African countries imported 15,032 MW of installed solar panel capacity, a 60% year-on-year increase from 9,379 MW in the previous year. Solar power generation has seen strong growth on the African continent in the past year, with 25 African countries now having installed solar capacity exceeding 100 MW, and 20 countries reaching record highs. Within a year, Algeria's solar panel imports increased 33-fold, Zambia's by 8-fold, Botswana's by 7-fold, and Sudan's by 6-fold. Liberia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Benin, Angola, and Ethiopia all saw imports more than triple. In addition, the development of solar power can help African countries with their energy transformation. It is reported that according to the calculation of Sierra Leone's solar panel imports in 2023, the power generation of these solar panels can account for 61% of the country's total power generation, Chad accounts for 49%, and Liberia, Somalia, Eritrea, Togo and Benin account for more than 10%.
