Dutch company Oceans of Energy recently assembled a new floating photovoltaic power station in the Port of Amsterdam in just three days. This modular facility will be towed and integrated with the Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind farm in the North Sea to create a hybrid power plant.

The Nymphaea Aurora floating solar platform consists of 196 pontoons and houses 1,400 photovoltaic panels. Its materials are 70% recycled metal and 80% recycled polymer. The platform's name is inspired by the water lily and its light, floating appearance. Aurora means "dawn" in Latin.

The modular platform was assembled in just three days in the Port of Amsterdam, and SolarPower Europe immediately launched the project. The platform will be towed 22 kilometers offshore IJmuiden in the North Sea and installed at the Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind farm.

It is understood that by using just 3% to 5% of the space between wind turbines for solar panels, power output could be increased by over 20%, while also leveraging existing energy system infrastructure.

The Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm is operated by CrossWind, a joint venture between Shell and Eneco. The wind farm has an installed capacity of 759 MW and comprises 69 wind turbines, while the Nymphaea Aurora photovoltaic power plant has an installed capacity of only 0.5 MW. The wind farm occupies one hectare and is installed in water at a depth of 25 meters.
